Nori for 8-ch Live Electronics with Laptop Orchestra

SICMF (Seoul International Computer Music Festival) 2023 l Seoul
Performance, Composition, Gestures and Sound Programming

* The performance video will be uploaded soon!

Nori is a collaboration with researchers from CREAMA (Center for Research in Electro-Acoustic Music and Audio) at Hanyang University. Professor Taehi Kim oversaw the overall management and took charge of 8-channel sound panning. This piece is composed to be performed by three musicians, as in this performance, or expanded to include more performers. In this project, I programmed Max for sound design and wrote the work along with DaEun Kim. I also participated in the performance with Soyeon Moon, DaEun Kim, and Professor Taehi Kim.

Program Note

'Nori' is a word inspired by Korean unique traditional folk games, which have their roots in the local lifestyle and customs that have been passed down through generations in the community. Just as our ancestors used to gather and enjoy cultural activities together, we aim to come together and celebrate Korean traditional culture through our traditional music reinterpreted with electronic music. The primary idea of this work is to propose a trend in creating new ways and electronic sound through reinterpretation of Korean traditional music using live signal processing. Nori is an innovative live electronic music performance that redefines Korean traditional music through live coding and gyro sensors. This groundbreaking concept creatively blends traditional Korean melodies and rhythms with modern laptop orchestra technology, bridging tradition and experimentation in an engaging manner. Starting from the foundation of traditional Korean music, Nori embarks on a creative sonic journey. Through live coding, performers write, manipulate computer code in real-time, and control sound generation and transformation with gyro sensors. The laptop orchestra, as a collective of digital instruments, creates a fantastic and ever-evolving musical experience. Nori reinterprets traditional Korean music while exploring the potential of live coding as a new trend and possibility in electronic music.
